The Libero-British artist’s unique approach stems from a background in theater and film at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and continued studies in photography and design at the School of Visual Arts, as well as training in high school performing arts.
Now she has her first solo exhibition in the UK, Some are born for endless night – Dark Matterwhich will launch at Autograph in London on September 13 and run until January 25, 2020. The immersive exhibition showcases over 60 new and existing works with key pieces from Viktor’s ongoing Dark Continent series, as well as a selection of unique paintings on canvas – including recent works debuted at the New Orleans Museum of Art.
Viktor’s works on paper and canvas draw on a variety of artistic traditions and visual influences, from European portraiture, classical mythology and astronomy to ancient Egyptian and African symbolism. Its deep, lustrous blacks are punctuated with luminous gold and opulent ultramarine blue. “At the heart of Lina Iris Viktor’s distinctive practice are complex cultural narratives and powerful mediations of darkness and being: each of Viktor’s lavish works are layered with profound provocations on history and culture, fueled by its astute interest in etymology, astrophysics and healing recovery”, explains Renée Mussai, the curator of the exhibition at Autograph.
“In a productive tension between aesthetics and politics, history is creatively reimagined with a focus on the circularity of time and an affirmative digging into our collective pasts.”
